What We Do

Discovery Ag Research

Researching New Varieties

We primarily work with seed breeders to test out their new varieties at our location in North East Saskatchewan.

Depending on the client, we will measure things like yield, height, maturity, lodging, disease, etc.

Agronomy on New Crops

At Discovery Ag Research we are not afraid to grow new crops. We have worked with challenging crops for several years, such as Hemp and Quinoa. Crops like these are relatively new to Saskatchewan and their agronomy is still being fine tuned for either higher production and quality, or to better manage pests and disease.

Testing Crop Protection Products

We test products like herbicides, fungicides, growth regulators, and seed treatments.

Location

Codette, Saskatchewan, Canada

Codette is approximately a 2.5 hour drive north east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. We are located in the north east portion of the Saskatchewan grain belt. The some of the crops grown in the area include oats, wheat, barley, canola, peas, flax, hemp, quinoa, fall rye, and black beans. The soil type here is Gray Luvisol and we average 12.9 inches of rainfall per year. Seeding starts around May 1 and harvest begins late August or early September.

A little bit about us
and our expertise

Who We Are

Discovery Ag Research is a small Contract Research Organization (CRO). With one main location the owner is personally monitoring every trial and ensuring quality. We are well equipped with for small plot research and employ the latest technology. As you can see from the photographs, all our trials are parallel and evenly spaced. The tractor is driven straight using “Auto Steer” powered by Trimble Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS. The GPS also controls the “Auto Trip” function on the plot seeder, which seeds the plots at exact intervals as the tractor makes each pass. This consistency sets up a solid beginning for every trial. The trials are monitored constantly with people on site nearly every day. Once the trials have been combined, the results can be provided quickly. Having the Harvest Master H2 grain gauge mounted on the plot combine allows us to take yield and moisture information directly onto a computer in real time during harvest. A final report is then drawn up and submitted to the client.

Equipment

  • XXL Wintersteiger plot seeder. It has 5 seed row unit with 12’’ spacing. Dry fertilizer is side banded. The openers are Pillar Laser disc/hoe openers, which have gauge wheels that are excellent for setting and keeping the proper seed depth.
  • Zurn 150 plot combine with Harvest Master H2 grain gauge.
  • The Trimble RTK GPS system control “Auto Steer” technology in the tractor and the “Auto Trip” function on the plot seeder.
  • Custom 3pt hitch heavy harrows built by R-Tech Industries in Manitoba. Two Degelman heavy harrow bars mounted onto the custom-built 3pt. hitch frame. This was created to closely mirror the common agricultural practices here in western Canada. It allows us to ensure that even our offsite locations have been carefully prepared for seeding.
  • ARM (Agriculture Research Management) software.
